The Balkan Church

When Jocelyn and I need to escape, and just have some time alone, we head to the canyons and ridges around our village.  Twenty minutes south of our house is an old church, the Balkan Kilese, that has provided us with some necessary time to explore.  Some of the frescoes are still intact and the setting is breathtaking.  The majesty of the place and the setting make it a fitting spot for some personal rejuvenation.

Typing for your many viewers here who don’t leave comments–just to say I love these photos and that they’re impressively accomplished.

…which is to say, “Well, at least I find you interesting.”

Great photos… So, when you need time alone with J you guys go to a church. There’s a novel idea.

  3. Byron says:

@ Jazz…very novel, right, just we get to go and no one else is there. That’s my kind of spirituality.

  4. Jocelyn says:

Jazz, baby: we haven’t been to this church together, actually; the reality of life with kids is that we tag team. Byron goes; then I go. One of us is home with the kiddles. I like the notion of us getting away together, though.

Wow (I know I say that a lot….) I went over to your flickr page and looked at the rest. The frescoes are amazing. “Coming up next on National Geographic, the lost frescoes of Turkey…..” Seriously, though, I love that sort of thing.

James: Clearly, then, this is the year your family needs to make that Major International Trip! Not only would you have a free place to stay, you’d have experienced guides to walk you to all the little-known places…and Byron’s one heck of a good cook, to boot.

these few pictures make me gasp. byron does capture a sense of peaceful grandeur and an atmosphere conducive to meditation and repose. the ancient artwork, the solitude and the surrounding scenery just seem a magnificent combination.

Particularly beautifully written posts on your site. I came across these trying to find a fix to a different issue and sort of lost track of time. I hope you’ll persist in putting up fantastic articles for everyone to read!
