Introduction

Our Sabbatical Year has started.  Yesterday we pulled away from our home and began our adventure.

Look for The Sabbatical Year comic to be posted weekly.  Individual drawings will be posted in between.  See the “About” tab under the Laying Fallow title for details on my intended posting schedule.

We are spending a couple days with friends and family before we fly to Turkey on August 3rd.  We hope for lots of sleep on the plane and tasty Turkish Air meals.  We have over 24 hours of travel until we reach our final destination.

Byron! How cool! I’m excited for you, and excited to see your link on Facebook so I can follow along. I’m wondering why you chose Turkey …? But maybe you’ll fill us in on later posts.

Sounds like an amazing adventure. You should contact Ali Akgun ’93 from Grinnell. I’m sure he has interesting family/friends back home in Turkey.

I’ll be more effusive when I’m not posting from my stupid little phone, but for now: SO excited about your trip and about this project. Love to y’all, and travel safely. xoxoxo

Byron, I am awfully pleased to make your acquaintance. Having been an avid follower of your dear wife’s POV for some time now, I have to warn you that she’ll be a hard act to follow. On the OTHER hand, you draw things!!!! And you draw them in a very funny way (that is a complimentary statement) with VERY entertaining thought balloons sticking out of them.
To be serious for a moment, this is great. Really great. You have to do the hard part of actually living this year in Turkey, but thanks to your combined talents the rest of us are going to have a lot of fun reading about it. I am now a happy camp-follower!!

Thanks for the words of excitement and encouragement. We are all a little tapped out right now from all the goodbyes but we hope that will make sleep on the plane tomorrow a bit more easy.

@lime and Deborah. I feel like I know so much about you from Jocelyn. Glad to have you following this blog, too. We won’t be competing. Maybe collaborating, though….

@Sharyn–thanks for the tip. I’d forgotten about Ali. I plan on contacting Aysha Malinder (sp?) when we get there. I guess she’s in Istanbul.

@Nancy–more on how we chose Turkey later. It was a process…

@Colleen–Wonderful, as always, to see you and Tim yesterday.

@Kathleen–you were an integral part in this whole saga so how could you not be included?

Greetings to the spouse of one of my favorite writers. “Ye Worde of the Day – Hubris” has just catapulted you up to a very close second place. Looking forward very much to your interpretation of the place that is NOT Tunisia OR Morocco.

Hi Byron, I follow Jocelyn’s blog, and was lucky enough to actually meet your whole family at Betty’s Pies in June. I have enjoyed the your artwork that Jocelyn has shared at times, and think your sabbatical year graphic panels are fantastic so far! How do you get them from paper to the web?

  11. Byron August 8, 2010

@ Joy. I remember meeting you this summer. What a wild connection that was. To get them on the web I brought along a small sheet fed scanner. I had always seen these at the doctor’s office for scanning insurance cards and realized they could do a decent job for what I am trying to do. Glad you enjoy the blog.
