A Quartermaster’s Tale

A hearty thanks to my dad for leaving this book with us after they visited.  It is a great read and makes me glad we chose Turkey over the heart of the Amazon.  And it has provided nice context for some aspects of our journey.

As we approach four months in country it is good to take stock of our preparations and see what has been helpful and what was a wild goose chase.  Next week I’ll explore the successes and failures.

If you haven’t read Edmund Morris’ two part biography of TR, you really should. An amazing man, really. I have the River of Doubt, but haven’t yet read it. I think it is moving up on my reading list!

Packing lists are great (I love lists!) but especially interesting is a list of what wasn’t necessary. When my parents and I visited Europe in the 90s for 15 days, I limited us to three small duffle bags and, believe it or not, there were items we didn’t need! So I’m looking forward to next week’s entry.

(Love the ‘Hang in there’ poster!)

Yep, there’s nothing more therapeutic than sticking one’s toes in a piranha infested river.

Yeah, you always end up taking stuff along that you don’t need, but that’s easy to say after the fact. So, how did you get all your stuff over there?

what a great reading suggestion from your dad and what a fun idea for the comic. how well i remember our own process before and after moving to trinidad. i look forward to your evaluation and what you should have jettisoned and what you rue not bringing. i’ll keep the malaria and pirhanas in mind should i need a good cheer up. 😉
